How long rust preventives and VCI packaging protect stored steel
요약
Indoor protection runs from about 9 to 18 months for oil and waxy-oil films to one to two years for sealed VCI packaging. Humidity and opening shorten it. These are supplier figures for clean steel in covered storage; ASTM D1748-24 does not prescribe exposure periods for a product (ASTM, 2024).
ASTM D1748-24, the humidity cabinet test for metal preservatives, is the active edition, last updated on 6 November 2024 (ASTM, 2024).
MIL-PRF-16173E qualifies Grade 1 hard film with 1,200 hours of accelerated weathering and Grade 2 soft film with 7 days of salt spray (MIL-PRF-16173E, 2017).
One thin oily preventive held 500 hours in a 38 °C (100 °F), 100% RH humidity cabinet with no stain or corrosion (Daubert, 2010).
MIL-PRF-16173E containers are to carry a first re-inspection date 2 years after the date of manufacture (MIL-PRF-16173E, 2017).
These figures apply to clean, dry steel stored under the conditions each supplier names. They do not cover parts that are already rusted, immersion or open marine exposure, or military preservation where the contract sets the method. Treat every supplier value as one claim for one product.
How long does each rust preventive type last indoors and outdoors?
Each rust preventive type lasts a different time: published figures run from about 9 months indoors for a thin oily film (Daubert, 2010) to up to 2 years for a wax-like coating (Cortec, 2026) and one to two years or more for sealed VCI film (ARMOR, 2024). The table below sets the re-preservation interval to plan around, with the source and its condition in each cell.
Product type | Indoor protection | Outdoor or transit protection | What shortens it |
|---|---|---|---|
Thin oily preventive, non-drying film | No corrosion after 9 months on 13 µm (0.5 mil) coated panels in an industrial warehouse (Daubert, 2010) | Not quoted; the residual film protected formed parts for more than 3 months in high humidity storage (Daubert, 2010) | Thin film, handling, high humidity |
Solvent cutback dewatering fluid, oily-waxy film | Up to 18 months (Matrix, 2025); more than 12 months for a waxy film (Millers Oils, 2025) | 6 months (Matrix, 2025); 3 to 9 months (Millers Oils, 2025) | Open exposure, uneven film |
Soft film compound, MIL-PRF-16173E Grade 2 | Intended for extended indoor protection; qualification needs at least 1 year of shed storage (MIL-PRF-16173E, 2017) | Limited periods, where metal temperature does not make the film flow (MIL-PRF-16173E, 2017) | Heat, film flow, wiping |
Hard film or wax-like coating, Grade 1 type | Not quoted separately | Up to 2 years for one wax-like coating that has a Grade 1 version (Cortec, 2026); Grade 1 is intended for extended outdoor exposure (MIL-PRF-16173E, 2017) | Damaged or thin film |
VCI film or bag, sealed | 1 to 2 years (ARMOR, 2024); up to 5 years claimed, depending on film construction and application (Cortec, 2013) | Not rated for open exposure; one maker recommends indoor storage or an outer box, carton or crate (Intertape Polymer Group, 2020) | Frequent opening, tears, wet or dirty parts (ARMOR, 2024) |
The key row for planning is sealed VCI film: ARMOR gives one to two years, longer when the vapor stays contained and shorter when the package is opened often (ARMOR, 2024).
Two rows need care. The soft film row gives a qualification minimum, not a service life: MIL-PRF-16173E requires Grade 2 panels to pass at least 1 year in a test shed (MIL-PRF-16173E, 2017). The VCI row assumes a closed package, and one VCI bag maker strongly recommends indoor storage or external containers such as boxes, cartons or wooden crates (Intertape Polymer Group, 2020). For dewatering fluids, the outdoor figures are much shorter than the indoor ones: 6 against 18 months in one data sheet (Matrix, 2025) and 3 to 9 against more than 12 months in another (Millers Oils, 2025). A plan that moves parts outdoors uses up protection faster.
How do you estimate rust preventive protection time for your own storage?
You estimate rust preventive protection time by taking the lower end of the supplier's figure for each storage condition and adding up how much of it each storage phase uses. When the shares add up to 1 or more, plan an inspection or re-preservation before the last phase ends. This is our planning method, not a method from any standard.
Read the indoor and outdoor or covered figures from the product's data sheet, with their conditions.
For each storage phase, divide the planned months by the lower figure for that condition.
Add the shares. A total near or above 1 means the plan relies on more protection than the supplier claims.
Worked example (illustrative storage plan): steel shafts are coated with a waxy dewatering fluid rated more than 12 months indoors and 3 to 9 months outdoors (Millers Oils, 2025). They sit 6 months in a warehouse and then 2 months in covered outdoor storage before shipment. Indoor share: 6 / 12 = 0.50. Outdoor share: 2 / 3 = 0.67. Total: 1.17, which is above 1, so inspect before the outdoor phase and re-preserve or move to sealed VCI packaging if the film is thin or damaged. Any re-application follows the product's SDS and the flammable-liquid rules where you work, such as US OSHA 29 CFR 1910.106 (OSHA, 29 CFR 1910.106); this fluid's flash point is 40 °C (Millers Oils, 2025).
Why do suppliers quote different protection times for rust preventives?
Suppliers quote different protection times for rust preventives because some report laboratory test hours, others report field months, and VCI figures depend on whether the package stays sealed. Test hours do not convert into months. ASTM D1748-24 states that the humidity cabinet "should not be relied upon to predict the effectiveness of a metal preservative in which high humidity is not the principal factor in the rusting" (ASTM, 2024), and that the test life required "should be based on actual experience with that type of preservative in the intended service" (ASTM, 2024).
The same product can carry both kinds of figure. One wax-like coating lists 2,500 hours in the humidity cabinet and 1,500 hours of salt spray, and separately claims up to 2 years of protection (Cortec, 2026). One thin oily preventive lists 500 hours in a humidity cabinet and 9 months in a warehouse (Daubert, 2010).
VCI figures vary with the package. ARMOR gives one to two years (ARMOR, 2024). Cortec claims up to 5 years for its co-extruded film, depending on film construction thickness and application (Cortec, 2013). Intertape Polymer Group gives up to two years of indoor protection (Intertape Polymer Group, 2020). Read each figure with its condition: sealed or opened, indoors or covered.
Where rust preventive duration figures do not apply
Rust preventive duration figures do not apply when the surface, the climate or the product itself differs from the supplier's test conditions. ARMOR advises that metal surfaces be clean and dry before VCI wrapping, because contaminants or moisture can diminish the effectiveness of the VCI (ARMOR, 2024). A soft film can flow off warm metal: MIL-PRF-16173E limits Grade 2 outdoor use to periods where metal temperatures do not produce prohibitive flow of the film (MIL-PRF-16173E, 2017).
The humidity cabinet does not speak for other climates. ASTM D1748-24 describes its data as of interest only in eliminating the most unsuitable materials or indicating a probable relative order of protection under high humidity (ASTM, 2024). Salt, acid fumes and condensation cycles need their own evidence.
The product must also be in date before it is applied. MIL-PRF-16173E asks for a first re-inspection date 2 years after manufacture on its containers (MIL-PRF-16173E, 2017), and one wax-like coating gives a shelf life of 2 years in original packaging indoors at 4 to 38 °C (Cortec, 2026). 자주 묻는 질문
Does opening a VCI bag shorten its protection time?
Yes, according to ARMOR's guidance. ARMOR states that if VCI packaging is frequently opened or exposed to air, its effectiveness will decrease more quickly, and advises sealed containers (ARMOR, 2024). One bag maker states its film will not fail if the packaging is not perfectly sealed (Intertape Polymer Group, 2020), so ask your supplier how their film behaves after repeated opening.
How long does a hard-film rust preventive last outdoors?
One wax-like coating with a MIL-PRF-16173E Grade 1 version claims up to 2 years of continuous protection (Cortec, 2026). The specification itself intends Grade 1 for extended outdoor exposure and qualifies it with 600 and 1,200 hours of accelerated weathering, not with a service life in months (MIL-PRF-16173E, 2017).
How long does a MIL-PRF-16173E soft film last in storage?
MIL-PRF-16173E sets minimum shed storage test times of 1 year for Grades 2 and 4 and half a year for Grades 3 and 5 (MIL-PRF-16173E, 2017). These are qualification test minimums in a test shed, not guaranteed field lives.
